Difficulties Persist for Relief Supplies in Northern Gaza In Spite Of Truce

While the access route from Egypt starts functioning in the coming days, aid groups face significant challenges distributing aid to the northern region, the area hardest impacted by food shortages, analysts state.

Transportation Challenges

Primary highways are virtually blocked due to massive destruction across the war-torn region – or remain under the control of military units. Any vehicle that breaks down is likely to be quickly plundered.

The main entry point, the key gateway to the northern region, devastated by two years of fighting, has been closed for multiple weeks, and government representatives have notified NGOs in Gaza that there are no short-term arrangements to activate the border point, as stated by relief personnel.

Damage in Northern Gaza

Gaza City was the focus of a large-scale military operation begun in August that was still under way when the temporary truce was signed last week.

Destruction in the north has been massive, with whole settlements including urban centers and Beit Hanoun in ruins as well as many of the surrounding regions of the urban center.

"Any activation of a crossing into Gaza is welcome, but we need to make sure we can access populations where they are," commented an experienced official from an international NGO.

Humanitarian Circumstances

Observers said many of the roughly 300,000 people who have come back to the northern region from the crowded shelter regions where they had been living during the armed conflict were now "staying" among the debris of their homes, often without any shelter and with scarce nutrition or hydration.

A spokesperson from an international organization said the damage in northern Gaza was "overwhelming".

"There is block after block, building after building ... there is urgent requirement for water. The situation is dire. We must have each access route operational," the spokesperson, who was in the northern city in recent days, stated.

Limited Entry

A local director located in the northern city said the needs in what used to be the territory's thriving business and community focal point were "enormous".

"There is hope and faith but there needs to be rapid progress on the access routes. We haven't seen major improvement on the ground yet," the representative commented.

"We are still getting a insufficient volume of aid [and] we are now commencing to comprehend the degree of destruction. Numerous roads are overwhelmed by rubble ... there is scarcely a building that is secure. There remains harm and live explosives across the region."

Ongoing Changes

Recently, humanitarian organizations said small quantities of vital cooking gas reached Gaza for the first instance in many weeks, along with deliveries of grain products, rice and farm products. The new supplies sent market costs falling.

Within a central community, a local resident said there had been some improvement since the ceasefire.

"Commercial areas are containing food, produce, and fruits, although the prices are remaining elevated and not affordable for all people," the individual commented.

Colder Months Preparations

"The crucial necessities now, specifically due to the approach of colder weather, are to have a temporary housing to keep us safe from the low temperatures and warm garments because the stores do not have sufficient clothing for us or, if they can be found, they are very few and extremely pricey."

Multiple organization-assisted bakeries in various locations have resumed functioning since the peace agreement.

Assistance Delivery

Trucks were stated to have come through the border access point via the eastern border to Gaza during Wednesday, though precise counts were uncertain.

Israel's media outlet reported that recent aid deliveries would include nutritional supplies, medical supplies, fuel, fuel for cooking and tools to fix vital infrastructure.

"Humanitarian aid remains flowing to the Gaza territory through the border access point and additional routes after security checks," an government spokesperson said.

Delivery Problems

But tracking the number of trucks could be deceptive, cautioned a specialist from an international NGO. "We must determine the materials within the transports and their capacity levels for it to be a genuinely useful indicator," the expert said.

Private companies are dispatching fleets of vehicles containing chocolate, carbonated beverages and treats, which have minimal health benefits, while emergency treatments for young people or individuals who have lacked adequate food for an extended period are unavailable.

Healthcare Situation

In Gaza City, only a handful of medical centers are working, compared with many in earlier this year.

Numerous organizations have significant funding of humanitarian goods warehoused near the territory pending distribution. A humanitarian body assisting Palestinians across the region for a long time has extended provisions of sustenance for all residents in place to be delivered.

"We have the resources, the tools and the skills ... we simply must have the entry," said a relief official, recently returned from Gaza.

Diplomatic Factors

An international initiative details that "complete" aid should enter Gaza and be provided through humanitarian bodies and the Red Crescent, without interference from both combatant organizations or national security.

This seems to prevent the disputed Israel-backed relief agency which commenced activities in earlier this year, resulting in disorderly situations and numerous casualties as numerous individuals gathered around its distribution sites.
