One-time NFL star Antonio Brown is returning to Miami to face an attempted murder accusation related to a shooting that occurred in May, with his lawyer filing a not guilty declaration on his behalf.

Correctional records in Essex, New Jersey, reveal that Brown was discharged on Tuesday early for his relocation to the state of Florida. Brown, a highly popular players in the NFL, had relinquished extradition to Florida from New Jersey, where he was detained after being apprehended in Dubai.

Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, said in an message that he has already lodged a written not guilty declaration to the murder attempt charge. Brown could be in a Miami hearing as early as Wednesday morning for a bail proceeding, Eiglarsh added.

According to his arrest order, Brown is accused of taking a firearm from a protection guard after a star fighting event in May and shooting multiple rounds at a person he had fought with before. The alleged target, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, informed authorities that a bullet scraped his neck.

Eiglarsh asserted that Brown was simply defending himself from Nantambu.

“The actions he was obliged to take were purely in defense against the reported victim’s violent behavior. Brown was attacked that night and acted within his rightful right to safeguard himself,” Eiglarsh said.

Brown was not promptly apprehended because originally police did not consider Nantambu as a target. It only afterward in May that Nantambu gave a complete testimony about the situation to police and pointed out Brown as the gunman, the document states.

From his online posts, Brown had been living in the city of Dubai for a number of months. In a post after the incident, Brown claimed he was safeguarding himself because he was “attacked by numerous people who sought to steal my jewelry and bring personal injury to me.”

A level two murder attempt accusation in Florida imposes a maximum 15-year jail term and up to a $10,000 fine in the event of a finding.

Brown has dealt with multiple legal problems over the time. He earlier had been charged of physical attack of a truck driver, various abuse accusations, neglect to pay child support and additional events.

In a recent game with his team against the opponents, Brown stripped off his jersey, equipment and gloves and exited the field, resulting in his termination by the team and effectively concluding his football journey.

Brown, who spent 12 years in the NFL, was an elite player who devoted the bulk of his career with Pittsburgh. For his professional life, Brown had over 900 receptions for more than 12,291 gains, the 28th greatest of history. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.
