Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
